McKinney-Vento Assistance
The federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act requires every school district to provide children and youth experiencing homelessness with access to public education and to support their success once they are enrolled.
Under McKinney-Vento, students who do not have a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence are ensured educational rights and protections.
This includes students who are:
- Living in emergency or transitional shelters
- Temporarily staying with friends or relatives due to loss of housing or economic hardship
- Living in motels, hotels, or campgrounds because they have no other adequate housing options
- Staying in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, bus or train stations, or other similar locations
